Marriage license requirements You do not have to be a resident of Louisiana in order to obtain a LA marriage license. You must be 18 years or older in order to marry without parental consent. If you are between 16 and 18, parents or legal guardians must be present. Technically, there is a 3 day waiting period from the time you receive your license to the date you can marry. However, a 72 hour waiver can be issued by your officiant. You must make sure your officiant attaches the waiver to your license before returning it to the Clerk of Court's office. You will need to bring picture IDs, certified copies of your birth certificates, and social security cards for both people. Also, if either party has been previously divorced or is a widow or widower, applicable divorce decrees and/or death certificate must be presented. Either bride or the groom must appear in person in order to apply. The fee for the license is usually around $25-$35, but it varies from parish to parish. You should contact the parish where you plan to be married for any additional information -- the following includes general information for every parish in the greater New Orleans area.
